What empath traits are obvious – and what are not? You might be an empath or a close family member or friend is. You might think you are going mad or just can’t understand your “sensitive ways”. You might be trying to change. Hold it! Have you ever considered that this is the way you are? Maybe it’s a matter of accepting yourself.
Once I accepted I was an empath my life changed – it suddenly meant that I didn’t have to change. But you can experience very difficult times before that. If you can identify with some of these empath traits you may be an empath.
Empaths are often labelled as shy, introverts, confused, fearful, anxious, inhibited and overly sensitive. But accepting this as part of your make-up changes everything. We no longer have to search for a “cure”.
Empath Traits at a Glance
This list is by no means the be all and end all. We can’t be put into a box and labelled. But you might be able to relate to some of them:

- People share their problems with you readily. Even strangers
- You are a listener

Two Types of Empaths
Research shows there are two types of empaths. Emotional and Cognitive. The emotional empath feels the energy and emotion of another. The cognitive empath puts themselves into another’s situation and tries to understand what they are going through.
The sad part is empaths can take on the baggage of other people – then feel down themselves, which could lead to anxiety and depression. There are many ways to develop your gift further and a Spiritualist Church could be a good place to start.
In my advertising and media career I have hired many staff. Sadly many of us tend to focus on education and ability rather than personality traits.
Empaths Save Lives
In 2008 the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai was bombed by terrorists. Staff risked their lives and in some cases created human shields to protect the guests. It is reported that a third of the staff died while helping 1500 guests escape. Rohit Deshpande, a business professor from Harvard did an investigation on this as reported by NPR – Why They Risked their Lives.
“They (Hotel) don’t look for students who have the highest grades. They’re actually recruiting for personal characteristics,” Deshpande says, “most specifically, respect and empathy.”
The story on the Taj Hotel is very sad but it shows us people who are empathetic to their fellow man. It doesn’t mean everyone will lay down their lives for a guest but it does show that the world is comprised of many different and wonderful personalities. It’s time to explore your own journey and see where you fit in – or where others fit in with you.
Can Empaths give Psychic Readings?
Not automatically. Yes, I believe an empath has unique talents but they may not extend further than “feelings”. The empath may feel they have a connection with the person but that should not automatically mean “psychic”. A psychic picks up on many different things including intuition, aura fields and other non visual fields.
A psychic empath has to take great care when reading. They may drain themselves very quickly if they are not shielded against another’s energy.
It is up to each and every one of us to embrace our empath traits and live our lives. Going forward. If you’re interested in knowing about empathic psychic abilities. I cover this on another page.
