If you are looking for the meaning of serendipity it probably means some events have happened in your life that have come about by “chance” or a “stroke of good luck”. These events or meetings would have been unplanned. You may hear “you won’t believe this…but” as a prelude to any serendipitous story. It is usually associated with a positive event – good luck – good fortune. I will give examples in my own life as well as friends that best describes this.
Years ago I was a struggling writer and actor and did a comedy show to make ends meet. I applied to do extra work on films. The company I tried had their books full. One day in the middle of nowhere, and whilst doing a comedy routine, the CEO of that company, Joy Hruby approached me and asked me if I was free the following week. I ended up with two years work in films, ads and TV series through that chance meeting. I met some wonderful struggling actors, ate lots of nice food – and got paid!
A Stroke of Good Luck?
Long ago I attended one of the first Mind, Body and Soul Expos in Sydney. A little voice was telling me to look at the yoga stand. I had no interest. The voice persisted. After some time at the Expo I left through the main doors – the voice got louder – I did an about turn and walked back to the yoga stand. I met Lynda Glen – the Yoga teacher. I started Yoga & Meditation. Lynda was married to Bruce who ran PR in Ogilvy & Mather Advertising. He introduced me to a copywriter Murray Redwood. I had never worked in advertising. Murray took me under his wing. Much to the horror of most seasoned juniors in the agency I started as a copywriter. I eventually traveled the world working in advertising. And through this journey the meaning of serendipity was reinforced time and time again.
Meaning of Serendipity – Coincidence?
I met a lady on the stairs where I was living in Bangkok. Her name was Sinsook. In conversation she asked did I do voice over work. I did. She passed my name to her sister Laksana who worked at Panorama Studios. I ended up doing voice over work on documentaries, ads, films and cartoons for over seven years. I was coming to understand the meaning of serendipity.
Right Place at Right Time?
I was emceeing a gig in Asia. A man came over and asked me why so many people knew me. I explained they knew my face from a daily television program I was appearing in. He asked could he be part of it – he was the Marketing Manager for a breakfast food brand with Nestle. They ended up advertising on my program for two years and their dollars paid the salary of my fourteen staff. I should also mention all previous attempts to get them to advertise had failed.
Meant to Be?
Whilst in Bangkok I normally walked to work on the right side of the very busy Sukhumvit Road. This day I walked on the left. A young man approached me and hugged me in the street – thanking me for my television show. I was stunned. He worked in an export company, his parents had passed and was a struggling student at the open university. I gave him a job as the office boy in the TV Station. Today he is a superstar and living his dream. He knows the meaning of serendipity. I just opened a door – his talent did the rest. The very popular Max Sumrong.
Out of the Blue?
I was planning to return to Asia in 2013. My psychic friend Ian Parkin had been suggesting for years that I create a psychic website. But I would brush off his suggestion – yes, I work with psychics on my radio program, but I don’t profess to be psychic. I hadn’t seen him for months and then he called from a train and wanted to stop and have lunch. I was free. We enjoyed lunch and talked about our adventures. Walking back to the train station he again suggested a psychic website. No, I was returning to Asia – I was not a practicing psychic and didn’t have all the knowledge. Then he suggested: “Why not the psychic reporter?” I stopped in the street – cancelled Asia in thirty seconds – and am now on another adventure – which has led to another adventure, which has led to another adventure.
That is the meaning of serendipity.
